Karwa Chauth is the fast kept by married women, from before sunrise until the Moon rises, for a long and happy married life. Here is the date for your city, worked out by the advanced iAstroGuru Engine.
Dates can vary with place and tradition. Check your family’s or temple’s local observance too.
About the festival date
Karwa Chauth is associated with Kartika Krishna Chaturthi in North India’s purnimanta calendar, called Ashwin Krishna Chaturthi in the amanta calendar. Moonrise is central to the observance. Use the chosen city’s date below; local family and temple traditions may differ.
Where and how it is kept
Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh keep Karwa Chauth most widely.
Sargi, a meal given by the mother-in-law, is eaten before sunrise; no food or water is taken until moonrise.
In the evening women gather for the katha and the karwa (pot) puja, then view the Moon through a sieve and offer arghya.
In Maharashtra, Karnataka and the south the same tithi is kept as Sankashti Chaturthi for Ganesha.
Planning your day
Moonrise differs by city by many minutes; check your own city rather than a national time.
Pregnant women, the unwell and the elderly often keep a lighter fast; follow family custom and your doctor.
All-day festivals and vrats for the selected year and city. Regional and sampradaya practice may differ by a day. Subscription keeps this selected year.
