How are the stones chosen?
The Lagna lord gives your life stone, the 5th lord your lucky stone and the 9th lord your fortune stone. Stones of grahas that rule only difficult houses (6th, 8th, 12th) are listed as ones to avoid.
Should I wear the stone straight away?
Tradition says to have a trusted astrologer look at your whole chart first, and to try strong stones like blue sapphire for a few days. A gemstone is never a treatment.
Are substitutes and rudraksha as good?
They are the traditional lower-cost options, and rudraksha and mantra are often suggested first.
