Understanding your result

Dashas are traditional chapters of life associated with planets. See which chapter is running today and when the next begins. Exact birth time is needed for these dates; periods describe reflective themes, not guaranteed events.

How Vimshottari dasha dates are calculated

The Vimshottari system divides a 120-year cycle among nine grahas: Ketu 7, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19 and Mercury 17 years.

The first Mahadasha

The ruler of the birth nakshatra runs first. Only the part the Moon has not yet crossed in that nakshatra remains, so the first period is usually shorter than its full length.

Antardashas

Each Mahadasha is split into nine Antardashas in the same order, starting with its own lord. Each lasts (Mahadasha years × sub-lord years) ÷ 120.

Why the time matters

The Moon moves about half a degree an hour. A two-hour error moves the Moon by about one degree, which can shift every dasha date by several months.

Worked example: a fictional birth

Born 1 Jan 2000 with the Moon at 100°, in Pushya (ruled by Saturn), 50% through it. Balance of Saturn: 19 × 50% = 9.5 years.

Inside Mercury: Mercury 2.41 years, Ketu 0.99 years, Venus 2.83 years, and so on.

Dashas describe themes for reflection. They are not guaranteed events, and no period is good or bad on its own.
