Good to know
A little clarity.
What are the Four Pillars?
BaZi means “eight characters”. Each pillar of your birth (year, month, day and hour) is written with a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch from the sixty-step cycle, giving eight characters in all. The stem of the day pillar is your Day Master, the centre of the reading.
Why does my BaZi year differ from my Chinese zodiac animal?
The popular zodiac changes at Lunar New Year. BaZi changes the year at Li Chun, the start of spring, when the Sun reaches 15° Aquarius around 4 February. If you were born between the two, the animals differ.
How are the months counted?
BaZi months are solar, not lunar. Each begins at one of the twelve “jie” solar terms, when the Sun moves into a new 30° section, so the Tiger month always starts at Li Chun and the Rabbit month around 6 March.
What if I do not know my birth time?
You still get three pillars (six characters) and your Day Master. Only the hour pillar needs the time. Births close to 11 pm, or close to a solar-term change, are flagged so you can check them.
What are Luck Pillars?
Ten-year periods that step forward or backward from your month pillar. Tradition sets the direction from the year’s yin or yang and the sex recorded at birth, and the starting age from the days to the nearest solar term. You can leave this out.
How was this checked?
Day pillars follow the unbroken sixty-day cycle and are checked against the Hong Kong Observatory calendar; full charts are checked against well-known published Four Pillars charts, and solar terms come from the Sun’s real position.
