How Guna Milan is calculated

Ashtakoota matching compares only the two Moon positions: the Moon sign and the nakshatra of each person. Eight kootas carry 1 to 8 points, 36 in all.

The eight kootas

Varna (1), Vashya (2), Tara (3), Yoni (4), Graha Maitri (5), Gana (6), Bhakoot (7) and Nadi (8). The heavier kootas, Bhakoot and Nadi, decide most of the score.

Nadi and Bhakoot dosha

Nadi dosha means both Moons fall in the same Nadi (0 of 8). Bhakoot dosha means the two Moon signs sit 2/12, 5/9 or 6/8 from each other (0 of 7). Texts list exceptions, which is why families also look at full charts.

Unknown birth time

The Moon moves about 13° a day, so a missing time can change the nakshatra. The tool then shows every possible score instead of one number.

Worked example: a fictional couple

Groom: Moon in Vrishabha, Rohini. Bride: Moon in Tula, Vishakha.

Guna Milan is one traditional input. It cannot predict whether a marriage will be happy; values, communication and shared decisions matter more.

Good to know

A little clarity.

How many gunas should match?

Traditionally, 18 of 36 is the minimum, 25 or more is considered very good, and 33 or more excellent. The score is one traditional guide among many.

What are the eight kootas?

Varna, Vashya, Tara, Yoni, Graha Maitri, Gana, Bhakoot and Nadi. Each looks at a different aspect of the two Moon positions and carries 1 to 8 points.

What is Nadi dosha?

When both people share the same Nadi, the Nadi koota scores 0 of 8. Traditional texts describe several exceptions, so families usually consider the full charts.

What is Dasha Porutham?

The South Indian method, used in Tamil Nadu and Kerala, checks ten agreements (poruthams) between the two Moon stars instead of adding points. Rajju and Vedha are treated as essential; the others are weighed together.

Why does another app show a slightly different score?

Regional traditions use slightly different tables for a few kootas, especially Vashya and Yoni. Differences of about one point between calculators are normal.
