The logic of your stones

Aarav, gemstones in Jyotish are chosen for the grahas that help your chart, never simply by birth month. The classical method starts from your Lagna, the rising sign, and looks at the lords of three houses: the 1st, the 5th and the 9th.

Three houses, three stones

Your Lagna is Simha (Leo). The lord of the 1st house gives your life stone, the stone of the self and vitality. The lord of the 5th house, the house of intelligence, children and merit, gives your lucky stone. The lord of the 9th house, the house of fortune, teachers and dharma, gives your fortune stone. The 1st, 5th and 9th are the trikona houses, the most auspicious in the chart, so their lords are the grahas a stone can safely strengthen.

For Simha these lords are Surya (the Sun) for the 1st, Guru (Jupiter) for the 5th and Mangal (Mars) for the 9th. Their stones are ruby, yellow sapphire and red coral.

What a stone is, and is not

Tradition holds that a stone amplifies the graha it belongs to. That is why a stone is chosen only for a graha that works in your favour, and why a stone for an unhelpful graha is avoided. A gemstone is a traditional practice, not a treatment, and nothing in this report is a prescription. Before wearing any stone, have a trusted astrologer look at your whole chart, and never buy under pressure.

02

Your life stone

Ruby (manikya) belongs to Surya, the lord of your Lagna.

Surya in your chart

Your Surya sits in Karka (Cancer) at 27°59′ in your 12th house, in Ashlesha pada 4, in the sign of a friend. Surya rules only your 1st house, which makes it a completely clean choice for a stone: it has no difficult house to bring along.

With the Lagna lord in the 12th, your vitality is restored in private, through rest, sleep and time away from the spotlight. A ruby is traditionally worn to strengthen confidence, presence and the sense of self when the Lagna lord sits in a hidden house, as yours does.

In daily life, a stronger Surya is traditionally linked with the themes of your Lagna: health and stamina, the way you carry yourself, recognition from people in authority and the confidence to lead. Because Surya is the lord of your Lagna, it is the stone most often suggested first for you.

How it is traditionally worn

Ruby is set in gold or copper and worn on the ring finger of the right hand, put on for the first time on a Sunday morning after reciting the Surya mantra, ॐ सूर्याय नमः. If a natural ruby is out of reach, red garnet or red spinel is the traditional substitute.

03

Your lucky stone

Yellow sapphire (pukhraj) belongs to Guru, the lord of your 5th house.

Guru in your chart

Your Guru sits in Simha at 0°08′ in your 1st house, in Magha pada 1, in the sign of a friend. Guru rules your 5th house of intelligence, children and merit, and also your 8th house of change and research. Because the 8th is one of the difficult houses, tradition asks for a full-chart check before a yellow sapphire is worn.

Your Guru is also combust, close to the Sun, which traditionally weakens a graha’s outward expression. That is exactly the situation in which a stone is used to strengthen a helpful graha, so yellow sapphire is often recommended for a chart like yours, once an astrologer has confirmed it.

Timing matters too. You are in Guru Mahadasha until 26 August 2027, the period ruled by the very graha this stone belongs to. Tradition considers the dasha of a graha the natural time to strengthen it, so if an astrologer confirms the stone for you, these years are when yellow sapphire is most often worn.

How it is traditionally worn

Yellow sapphire is set in gold and worn on the index finger, first put on on a Thursday morning with the mantra ॐ बृहस्पतये नमः. Citrine or yellow topaz is the traditional lower-cost substitute.

04

Your fortune stone

Red coral (moonga) belongs to Mangal, the lord of your 9th house.

Mangal in your chart

Your Mangal sits in Simha at 25°16′ in your 1st house, in Purva Phalguni pada 4, in the sign of a friend. For a Simha Lagna, Mangal rules both the 9th house of fortune and the 4th house of home and inner peace, a kendra. A graha that rules both a kendra and a trikona is called the Yogakaraka, the most helpful planet a chart can have.

That makes red coral one of the most traditionally favoured stones for your Lagna. Mangal gives initiative and courage; strengthening it is traditionally linked with luck that follows action.

Mangal in your Lagna also rules your 4th house of home, property and inner peace, so red coral is traditionally linked with courage at work and with a settled home life at the same time. It is often worn alongside the life stone rather than instead of it.

How it is traditionally worn

Red coral is set in gold or copper and worn on the ring finger, first put on on a Tuesday morning with the mantra ॐ भौमाय नमः. Carnelian is the traditional substitute. Ruby and red coral are traditionally worn together on the same finger without conflict, as Surya and Mangal are friends.

05

Stones to avoid

A stone for a graha that works against your chart is traditionally set aside, however beautiful it is.

Pearl

For a Simha Lagna, Chandra (the Moon) rules only the 12th house, the house of losses and expenses. Tradition therefore does not recommend a pearl for you, even though your Moon in Tula is gentle and sociable. Your Moon is better supported through rest, harmony and good company than through a stone.

This is not about the Moon being weak; it is about what the Moon rules for your Lagna. A stone strengthens every house its graha rules, and for you the Moon’s only house is the 12th, so a pearl would amplify expenses and withdrawal rather than anything you want more of.

Hessonite and cat’s eye, the stones of Rahu and Ketu, are also worn only after careful testing, because they are said to act strongly either way.

06

Wearing, testing and care

Choosing and testing

Tradition asks for a natural, untreated stone with no cracks. Weights are often quoted in ratti; treat them only as a traditional guide, and let a trusted astrologer advise on size. It is also customary to wear a new stone for a few days first and notice how you feel before committing to it; if anything feels wrong, remove it.

Before first wearing, stones are traditionally washed in unboiled milk or Ganga water and energised on their own day with their mantra. Clean them gently and remove them during heavy physical work.

Which stone first

If you choose to wear only one stone, tradition usually begins with the life stone, ruby, because it supports the Lagna itself and Surya brings no difficult house with it. Red coral, for your Yogakaraka, is the natural second. Yellow sapphire, which also rules your 8th house, is the one to take only after an astrologer has looked at your whole chart, even though Guru’s dasha makes it timely now.

What we will never do

We do not sell gemstones, and nothing in this report is designed to make you buy one. Many people choose the rudraksha and mantra in the next chapter instead, and tradition counts those as complete practices in their own right.

07

Rudraksha and mantra

Each graha also has a rudraksha and a beej mantra: simple, low-cost companions or alternatives to a stone.

Your three grahas

For Surya, your Lagna lord, the traditional rudraksha is the 1 mukhi, and the mantra is ॐ सूर्याय नमः, best recited at sunrise on Sundays.

For Guru, your 5th lord, the rudraksha is the 5 mukhi, the most widely worn of all, and the mantra is ॐ बृहस्पतये नमः on Thursdays.

For Mangal, your Yogakaraka, the rudraksha is the 3 mukhi, and the mantra is ॐ भौमाय नमः on Tuesdays. A simple, consistent practice of any one of these is valued more in tradition than an expensive stone worn without attention.

A simple daily practice

Tradition values regularity over quantity: eleven or twenty-one repetitions of one mantra each morning, on a rudraksha mala, is a complete practice. For a Simha Lagna, beginning with the Surya mantra at sunrise pairs naturally with the rest your chart needs, since your Lagna lord sits in the 12th house of sleep and renewal.
