Dhanteras opens the five days of Diwali with Dhanvantari and Lakshmi puja and a lamp for Yama. Here is the date for your city, worked out by the advanced iAstroGuru Engine.
Dates can vary with place and tradition. Check your family’s or temple’s local observance too.
About the festival date
Dhanteras (Dhantrayodashi) is observed on Kartika Krishna Trayodashi in the purnimanta calendar, called Ashwin Krishna Trayodashi in the amanta calendar, with the main puja in the evening (pradosh). The date below is calculated for the chosen city; regional observances may differ.
How India celebrates
North India: families buy gold, silver, new utensils or a broom, and worship Lakshmi and Kubera in the evening.
Across India: a lamp is lit facing south at dusk for Yama (Yama deepdaan), for the well-being of the family.
Dhanvantari, the physician of the gods in tradition, is worshipped; the day is also observed as Dhanvantari Jayanti.
Gujarat and Rajasthan: trading families worship their account books and coins, sometimes washed in milk.
Maharashtra: Vasubaras, honouring cows and calves, falls just before Dhanteras.
Planning your day
Purchases are traditionally made during the day or at pradosh; check your city’s panchang for Rahu Kaal before fixing a time.
This guide gives the festival date, not a festival-specific puja muhurat; the linked Panchang gives general daily timings.
